Under the Trump administration, billions in research funding are being frozen, grant reviews are halted, and scientists are being pressured to self-censor when discussing critical topics such as equity and climate change. A broad executive order now prohibits federal agencies from funding projects related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), compelling universities to remove such terms in order to secure grants.
Today, 90 words are classified as banned, forcing researchers to comb through their work to identify, replace, or remove them entirely. More and more projects are at risk, even those that don’t touch on DEI-related topics, while the list of banned words continues to grow.
When Words Disappear, So Does Reality
Words shape our reality. Without the language to express and address our most pressing global challenges, we risk losing the ability to understand and act upon them. Silencing certain words means silencing the ideas they represent and defending even the most uncomfortable words is essential to maintaining a free society. This is why we’ve created a dedicated space where these banned words can be seen, spoken, and remembered.
