Simone Battaglia, Alessio Avenanti
Author
Simone Battaglia is an Assistant Professor in Cognitive Neuroscience at the Centre for Studies and Research in Cognitive Neuroscience, Department of Psychology, University of Bologna (Italy). He is also a Research Fellow at the University of Turin and a Clinician at the Cognitive Neuropsychology Center of Niguarda Hospital in Milan.
He obtained a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience from the University of Bologna (2016–2020) after completing a MSc in Neuroscience and Neuropsychological Rehabilitation (2015) and a BSc in Psychology (2013). His academic training includes different international research experiences at UiT, The Arctic University of Norway, Maastricht University, the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, and Bangor University.
His research focuses on the functional interplay between different brain areas involved in emotional learning, action control, spatial representation, brain plasticity, language, and decision-making. To investigate these processes, he employs non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), along with various neuroscientific methods to record physiological activity (EEG, SCR, HRV, EMG). His work encompasses both healthy individuals, examining inter- and intra-individual differences, and patients with acquired brain injuries.
Recently, he was recognized among the world’s top 2% of scientists by Stanford University & Elsevier for two consecutive years. In 2024, he received the Young Investigator Award from the European Society for Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience (ESCAN) and the Young Researcher Award from the Italian Association of Psychogeriatrics.
