Media languages Kazakh, Russian and English.
The media scene is dominated by state-owned and pro-government outlets. Most major outlets are controlled by the government directly or indirectly. Nearly all pro-opposition print titles have been closed or forced into exile. Those that remain are “collapsing under the impact of fines”, says Reporters Without Borders (RSF). TV is the most popular medium. The government operates national networks. Russian stations are carried via cable and satellite. The internet is “closely controlled, with mass surveillance, imprisonment of bloggers and frequent cuts in access to news websites, social networks and messaging services”, says RSF.

Country Curiosities
Kazakhstan is the original land of apples, home to the wild Malus sieversii species, believed to be the ancestor of modern apples. Almaty, the country’s second-largest city, takes its name from this heritage—“Alma-Ata” means “land of apples” in Kazakh. The city is known for the Aport, a giant red apple weighing up to one kilogram, symbolizing Kazakhstan’s deep-rooted horticultural history and its connection to this iconic fruit.
Additionally…
- Kazakhstan is the world’s largest landlocked country, stretching over 2.7 million square kilometers, and it’s also the 9th largest nation globally!
- Kazakhstan has two capitals: the official one, Astana, whose name fittingly means “capital” in Kazakh, and Almaty, known as the “southern capital” and a cultural hub.
- Baikonur Cosmodrome, the first and largest spaceport in the world, launched Yuri Gagarin into space in 1961, marking humanity’s first steps beyond Earth.
- With over 130 ethnic groups, including Kazakhs, Russians, Uzbeks, and Tatars, Kazakhstan is a vibrant tapestry of languages, traditions, and customs.
- The name “Kazakhstan” combines “Kazakh,” meaning “free spirit” or “wanderer,” and “-stan,” meaning “land,” reflecting its nomadic heritage.
- Although landlocked, Kazakhstan borders the Caspian Sea, the world’s largest inland body of water, rich in oil, gas, and diverse wildlife.
- Eagle hunting, an ancient Kazakh tradition, sees berkutchi hunters train golden eagles to catch prey, blending survival and cultural pride.
- Kazakhstan is the world’s largest uranium producer, contributing a staggering 43% to global production in 2022.
- In 2023, the EU became Kazakhstan’s top trading partner and foreign investor, handling 37% of its exports and nearly 30% of its trade.
